Mt. Nebo Cemetery rediscovers a George Washington obelisk

During the decades before the cemetery entrance was moved, visitors to Mt. Nebo entered through a park-like promenade called the George Washington Bicentennial Memorial Grove. At the center of the grove of 200 trees was an obelisk monument erected in 1932 by the Ladies Shroud Society of BMH Congregation in commemoration of George Washington’s 200th birthday.

Haym Salomon, key financier of the Revolution

In the story of the American Revolution, names like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson dominate. Behind the scenes, a lesser known figure played a crucial role in the fight for independence: Haym Salomon, a Polish-born Jewish immigrant whose financial acumen and personal sacrifice helped keep the revolutionary cause alive during its most desperate moments.

Dr. Yehezkel Caine: Health in the air…and on the ground in Jerusalem

Here’s a riddle: What do the Ebola virus, a flight attendant, a military flyover, a tourist in Denver and someone in cardiac arrest over the Atlantic have in common? Answer: Aviation medicine. It’s a medical field that very few have heard of, but Dr. Yehezkel Caine has been involved with it for close to 50 years. The British-born doctor, now president of Jerusalem’s Herzog Medical Center, was already a qualified physician when he joined Israel’s Air Force, training as a pilot.

Water wisely — and legally — as drought drags on

While Colorado’s lack of snowfall this past winter was devastating for the state’s ski industry, it will be challenging for Colorado homeowners and groundskeepers who cherish their green lawns and gardens.

Hostage mother’s 505 days — Shelly Shem Tov recounts

Friday, Oct. 6, 2023 was Shelly Shem Tov’s 51st birthday. It was a perfect day. “We woke up in the morning and went to Jerusalem. We ate and drank and laughed, and I was very grateful. On the way home, I looked at the sky and said, ‘Thank you, G-d. I have everything I need.” That “everything” meant Mikey, her husband of 30 years; daughter Danna, 27; and sons Amit, 24, and Omer, almost 21. They live together in the upscale city of Herzliya on Israel’s Mediterranean coast.

At CSU, Israeli-American Hila Novat stands up for Israel

It is somewhat surprising that Hila Novat has become a leading figure in the pro-Zionist scene at CSU in Fort Collins. She is Israeli-American and has served in the IDF. But after Oct. 7, 2023, she laid low, trying to protect her mental health. It was her first year on a new campus, in a new state. But two things started weighing on her. First, the mis- and disinformation campaigns on campus. “A loud minority was becoming the majority of people hating us for things that aren’t true,” she says.

From duty to dance — IDF flag bearers

For one soldier identified for security reasons as O, the dream began years ago while watching Israel’s Independence Day ceremony from abroad, where her diplomat parents were posted. “I always watched the ceremony even when I lived abroad,” said O, who now serves in the IDF’s Behavioral Sciences Unit. “I would sit with my grandparents. It was their favorite part of the year.”

Gabe Zeller, who was unable to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah at age 13, celebrated it in 2026 at age 40.
L'Chaim (Spring)

At age 40, Gabe Zeller’s wasn’t your average Bar Mitzvah

Bar and Bat Mitzvahs are fairly regular occurrences at Chabad Jewish Center of South Metro Denver. The occasions, while adhering to Jewish law and respecting age-old traditions, were each tailored to reflect the celebrants’ individual personalities. The common denominator: the honorees were all either 12 or 13 years old. Over the weekend of Jan. 30-31, 2026, the Bar Mitzvah of Gabe Zeller at South Metro was completely different, and one that everyone associated with it will never forget.
