We all have flashpoints in our lives. For Ruthie Lipshulch, cantorial soloist at Temple Sinai, hers came when she was three years old.

That’s when Lipshulch saw an outdoor performance of “Evita” in Houston.

She became hooked on the song “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina,” and her singing voice was born. Ruthie became a performer on Disney Cruise Lines, and also at Seattle’s Opera on Tap Company.

Lipshulch was cantorial soloist at her home synagogue in Seattle, Temple De Hirsch Sinai, and also led High Holiday services at Congregation Bet Chaverim in Des Moines, Wash., leading to her current position in Denver.

From performing on Disney Cruises, what led you to the pulpit?

I love the opportunity to share music with people of all generations, all under one roof. I love to sing and have always felt most connected to G-d when I do.

Growing up, singing prayers was the way I felt most connected to something greater than myself, and I believe that connection ultimately led me to Temple Sinai.

Finding your own voice is a journey, and I feel fortunate to be part of a community where music, spirituality and connection come together.

What satisfaction do you get from being a cantorial soloist?

I think every cantorial soloist finds a community that feels like home, and Temple Sinai has embraced who I am. That has been such a blessing. I’m grateful to share both new and traditional Jewish music and to use my voice in different ways to inspire our community.

Why be Jewish?

Being Jewish connects me to my roots, reminds me where I come from, and gives me a sense of belonging to something greater than myself and to one another.

Who has been an inspiring figure in your life?

My family, especially my parents. I admire their creativity, their sense of adventure and the way they give of their heart.

Here All Along, by Sarah Hurwitz.

I used to love 24! I loved the movie “Remarkably Bright Creatures,” and I’m looking forward to the next season of “Nobody Wants This.”
